Johnston County health officials have rescinded a “boil water” notice that shut down about 100 restaurants and commercial kitchens in Smithfield on Wednesday evening and all day Thursday after samples from the town’s water supply tested positive for potentially deadly E. coli bacteria.
The notice was sent out by town clerk and human resources director Debbie Godwin around 10 p.m. Thursday.
“All residential water customers can resume the full and safe use of their water,” stated a news release signed by City Manager Eric Williams and Public Utilities Director Earl Botkin. The release said certain commerical businesses would be contacted about the procedures that would allow them to resume business on Friday.
