Hubert Harold Cotton, 80, died Sunday, July 4, 2010. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 3:00 pm at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
Harold was born May 7, 1930 to the late Willie J. And Nellie U. Cotton of Kipling, NC. After serving in the U.S. Navy he returned and married Lora L. Kinton of Willow Spring. In March 1956 they moved to Fuquay-Varina to make it their home of 54 years.
Harold and Lora began their life in Fuquay-Varina as a farm family. After the birth of their children, Harold went to work for the U. S. Postal Service as a Raleigh City Letter Carrier, retiring in 1993 with 31 years of service. To keep busy after retirement, he worked 9 years with Enterprise Fleet Service.
Retirement didn't slow Harold down. He and Lora continued to travel. Their last trips were to Hawaii, an Alaskan Cruise and Canada by Train. He often told others not to wait, travel while you are young. Time passes too fast.
Harold enjoyed growing things and became a Master Gardener with Wake County Home Extension Service. He spent many hours at Oak View County Park developing the orchards for public tours. He was very proud of his own farm and fruit trees and vineyard. He shared fruits and knowledge of how to care for them with friends and strangers alike.
He was a faithful servant and member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for 54 years. In 2009 he was honored as a Deacon Emeritus. In retirement he continued to serve his community. He was a McCullers Ruritan Club member for 45 years. He also was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, both of which he held several offices throughout the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, W. J. Cotton, R. Utley Cotton and Lewis R. Cotton and a sister, Mary Sue Cotton Eason.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years Lora Kinton Cotton; sons, Ronnie Everett Cotton of Greensboro; David Harold Cotton, Sr. and wife, Darlene of Fuquay-Varina; daughter, Donna Cotton Hendricks and husband, Jeff of Fuquay-Varina; grandson, Davis Harold Cotton, Jr.; step-grandchildren, Jackie and David Dillon, Nick Foldes, Neil Foldes, Chris Hendricks, Brooke Hendricks, Jenny and Todd McLamb and Conner McLamb.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. JoEllen Speca, Nurse Nancy Burns and staff at Rex Hematology Oncology Associates for their compassionate care. The family also wishes to thank the caring staff at the Hospice of Wake County William M. Dunlap Center for Caring.
