CARY -- What could be more fun on a summer evening than sitting outside watching "The Wizard of Oz" while a live orchestra plays the soundtrack? Sure, you could think of something, but the N.C. Symphony is upping the stakes in this special pops concert at Koka Booth Amphitheatre on Saturday.
Bring the kids, of course
Gates open at 6 p.m. Follow the yellow brick road. Dorothy, Glinda, the Wicked Witch and other characters will make themselves available for photo ops. Dress up in Oz-wear and register for the costume contest: Three children and two adults will win prizes.
Raffles
A 4.7-carat emerald green tourmaline ring, custom-made by a Raleigh jeweler, and a children's playhouse are prizes. From 6 to 7 pm., picnickers will be eligible to win a gift package from Whole Foods Market as part of the N.C. Symphony's summer-long Picnic of the Week contest. Check out the symphony website for details.
Cans for culture
A donation of five canned goods for the N.C. Food Bank earns a ticket to the amphitheater's summer movie series.
Kick back and enjoy
Registration for prizes and giveaways will close at 8:15.
Fifteen minutes later, guest conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, left, will take the stage with the orchestra and the film will begin.
