The Summer Season

Clayton's Harrison blends training with service

Published: July 7, 2010

Keni Harrison is blending training with service this summer.

The Clayton High senior started her summer by finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles in the New Balance Nationals, the unofficial national high school championships.

She later won North Carolina Junior Olympic championships in both events. She is training Monday through Thursday in anticipation of competing in the Junior Olympics regionals, and she hopes to qualify for the nationals.

In between the competitions, she spent a week at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in a program designed to orient potential Academy candidates.

She also is finding time to do service for her community.

Her track schedule prevented her from going on a mission trip with the First Baptist Church of Smithfield, but she will be involved later this summer with mission activities in Smithfield and the surrounding community.

She will also teach a week at the church's Vacation Bible School.

"I'm working hard, but I want to help other people, too," she said.
