As I read Steve Ford's July 11 column "Culture clash over Wake schools," I believe he should consider a few points:

The current Wake County school board not originally from this area was elected by North Carolina natives, folks originally from the North and other areas and countries. Those who voted for the current school board knew their views and proposed direction from the outset. In Ford's diverse world, the school board of the 21st century should be comprised only of Good Southerners.

Why not try a new approach if the current system is not producing the results it should? For the 2008-2009 school years, the Wake school system's overall graduation rate was 78.4 percent. If it is acceptable to Good Southerners and their values (as Ford references) to leave 21.6 percent of children to fail, then I'm all for a new direction.

David Dilts,

Cary
