Personally, I am extremely proud of the actions of North Carolina's Gov. Terry Sanford in 1963 as opposed to Alabama's Gov. George Wallace. Because of Sanford's stand, this state has come further and faster than any of the other Southern states and likely further than most Northern states when it comes to race relations. But I'm afraid that with the current Wake County school board majority, we are headed back to the days of "separate but equal." We who've lived a long time know all about that.

John B. Hagler,

Raleigh
