From Staff Reports

Northern Wake County Republicans are recruiting volunteers "to counter the NAACP's rally" planned in protest at Tuesday's meeting of the Wake County school board.

In a Friday post to its e-mail list, the Northern Wake Republican Club called for 164 "solid conservative people" to sign up for tickets to the meeting and encouraged them to speak in "support of our school board's decision to stop forced busing."

Attempts to reach club officers for comment Saturday were not successful.

Opponents of the school board's policy favoring neighborhood schools over busing to ensure economic diversity plan a march and protest Tuesday. A similar protest shut down the board's June 15 meeting for almost two hours.

State NAACP president William Barber has been one of the board's most prominent opponents.

The Northern Wake Republicans' e-mail advises board supporters to arrive by 10 a.m. at the Board of Education Building to apply for tickets. Distribution begins at 12:30 p.m. for the 3 p.m. meeting.

The main board room has 150 seats; 100 more are available in conference rooms with audio and video feeds.

The e-mail also suggests that speakers thank the board for administrative staff cuts that, it says, saved $20 million, and for saving another $20 million by leasing its office space at the Crossroads Corporate Park in Cary and selling its main building in Raleigh.

"These are ... issues our four [Republican] school members pledged during their campaigns and now they have delivered. It's up to us now to support them on Tuesday and thank them for their diligent work."
