Clippers 8, Bulls 3

From Bulls news releaseJuly 20, 2010

Durham Bulls

A five-run fourth inning was too much to overcome, and the Durham Bulls lost to the Columbus Clippers 8-3 on Monday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Clippers pulled away in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of Jeremy Hellickson's inability to command his fastball in his first start since July 5. Hellickson lasted just 31/3 innings.

Shelled: The right-hander walked the bases loaded to start the inning, and Eziquiel Carrera reached on a fielding error by first baseman Chris Richard to bring a run across. The Clippers' Jose Constanza brought in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, and Josh Rodriguez singled to load the bases with one out. Right-hander Dale Thayer relieved Hellickson and gave up a bases-clearing double to Jordan Brown that broke the tie and gave Columbus a 6-3 lead.

Keep walking: Hellickson took the loss, giving him an 11-3 season record. The 12 walks by Bulls pitchers were a season high; they had walked nine on three occasions this season.

Winning efforts: Yohan Pino (8-5) earned the win for the Clippers, giving up three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Carlton Smith and Zach Putnam combined to work a scoreless final three innings.

Next game: The teams meet again tonight when Durham right-hander Richard De Los Santos (7-5, 4.34) takes the mound against righty Carlos Carrasco (8-4, 4.10). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.

Transaction: Durham left-handed pitcher Carlos Hernandez (hip) was placed on the disabled list Monday.
