At Tuesday's school board meeting, Chairman Ron Margiotta assured, "This board does not intend to create high-poverty or low-performing schools." Dare I say Margiotta lied?

On Dec. 1, Margiotta was elected school board chairman. His second order of business was updating Student Assignment Policy 6200 to meet the new majority's standards. School board minutes reflect the elimination of two target goals: To have less than 40 percent of students at any school qualifying for free and reduced lunch and to have less than 25 percent of students performing below grade level.

When looking at the policy, it is also impossible to ignore that the word "diversity" is frequently crossed out. It seems these changes alone allow for high-poverty, low-performing schools, so I'm with school board member Keith Sutton. Can we get that promise in writing, Margiotta?
