Chances that oil from the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico will reach North Carolina's shores have been considered low from almost the beginning of the disaster.
Now, with the well temporarily capped and Gulf currents behaving favorably, the likelihood has become even less, according to an expert at N.C. State University.
The Loop Current that moves water around the southern tip of Florida so that it can rush up the East Coast as the Gulf Stream has broken up, said Dr. Ruoying He, an associate professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences.
