The Associated Press

SNOW HILL -- Flags at the Greene County courthouse were flying at half-staff Friday as a tribute to a North Carolina sheriff's deputy shot to death as he arrived to help calm a domestic disturbance.

The Free Press of Kinston reported that flags were lowered to honor Deputy Jon Willis.

Sheriff Lemmie Smith said the 30-year-old Greene County sheriff's deputy was answering a domestic call in Snow Hill on Wednesday night when 22-year-old Daniel Myers came out of a mobile home and shot the deputy twice.

Smith said Myers then shot and killed himself.

Willis leaves behind two children.
