If you believe - really believe - that sneezing with your eyes open can make your eyeballs pop out, you should probably be watching "Mythbusters" on the Discovery Channel. Regularly.
And you should probably also get a ticket to see the show's hosts live in Chapel Hill this summer.
"Mythbusters" stars Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman will visit UNC's Dean Smith Center on Sept. 19 as special guests of the N.C. Science Festival, appearing in "An Afternoon with Adam and Jamie."
The men, known for their work in special effects, will share behind-the-scenes stories about their work on the program and show a video of spectacular explosions and outtakes from the show. They will also take questions from the audience in a session led by UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp.
On "Mythbusters," Savage and Hyneman lead a team of investigators who test common myths using accepted scientific methods (i.e., crazy experiments).
Here are just a few of the more than 700 myths they've tested so far, in addition to the eyeball-popping myth: Will helium make a football fly farther? Could cockroaches really survive a nuclear explosion? Is it possible to gouge out a shark's eyes when you're clasped in its jaws? Can you make a bumpy ride smoother by driving faster?
Tickets are on sale for the UNC show and can be purchased through www.ncsciencefestival.org. You can get a standard ticket ($18-$28), but the premium ticket ($100) gets you in to a meet-and-greet before the show, a photo with the guys, reserved seats up front and an N.C. Science Festival T-shirt.
The festival runs Sept. 11-26.
