North Carolina has received $83 million in federal grants to extend broadband connectivity in rural parts of the state.
The money will pay for five of 126 broadband projects that have received federal stimulus money.
Among the projects:
A $25.3 million grant to promote social and economic development in a rural, economically distressed area of western North Carolina by delivering critical digital services (TV, data and voice over internet protocol).
A $21.6 million award to provide fiber-optic high-speed broadband, video and voice services to underserved rural areas in Wilkes County.
A $19.9 million award to Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation to provide advanced broadband services via a high-speed fiber optic network to end users in service areas in southeastern North Carolina.
These latest projects are part of a second round of broadband projects that have received stimulus dollars. In January, MCNC received $28.2 million to build a 480-mile fiber-optic network.
