From staff reports

Wake Superior Court Judge Howard "Howdy" Manning Jr. might want to check if tape is rolling next time he plays a joke while walking by a television news reporter doing a live shot outside the courthouse doors.

Manning, a past N&O Tar Heel of the Year recognized for his judicial oversight of the state's school districts to ensure that school children around the state are afforded a sound education, was filmed and broadcast doing what looked like a wave, dance or brief jig Tuesday on the Wake County courthouse steps. WRAL reporter Amanda Lamb had just started her somber report on the murder trial of a Garner mother accused of killing her 19-month-old son. Manning is not the judge presiding in the trial.

To check out the video, go to WRAL's link here and wait until Lamb starts giving her report.

Known as Judge Howdy, Manning has a reputation for cutting up from the bench, and often laces his hearings with colorful stories and language.

Manning was on the bench is a separate case Wednesday afternoon, and wasn't immediately available for comment.
