My son, Seth Keel, spoke at the Wake County school board meeting Tuesday in opposition to the repeal of the nationally recognized diversity policy. Because he feels so passionately about this issue, he also participated in an act of civil disobedience.

Following the meeting, board member Deborah Prickett said that she found the situation very sad, that she hoped the young man really realized what he was doing with his life and his record.

My response: I know what he is doing with his life - he is standing up for what he believes and demonstrating that he respects and values diversity. Unlike the few who wish to repeal the diversity policy, he is able to see beyond his own interest to the interest of all students. This is clearly not "very sad."
