Three Capital Area Soccer League Classic teams kicked off their 2010 Region III Premier League seasons in Greenville, S.C., when they competed in the Region III College Showcase this weekend. Region III is a league made up of the top teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
The U-17 Girls ('93) CASL Spartan Elite Black team split games over the weekend, losing its first match to Florida Rush ('93/'94) Nike 1-0 on Saturday. It was followed with a 3-1 victory over Palm Harbor from Florida, with goals from Caroline Lindquist, Sydney Sawaya, and Meghan Poirier.
The two-time Region III defending champion U-16 Girls ('94) CASL Spartan Elite Black opened its new campaign with a pair of wins.
Saturday, it topped Space Coast United Storm from Florida 3-2, with goals from Alexis Shaffer, Bria Dixon, and Maya Worth, and followed up with a 5-0 win over Brandon Flames Blue with a goalkeeper shutout from Taylor Francis and goals from Joanna Boyles, Paige Reckert and Alexis Shaffer (hat trick).
The only CASL boys squad in action for this competition was the U-16 ('94) CASL Elite, which had two shutout victories. On Saturday, it topped South Carolina United Mount Pleasant ('94) Elite 3-0 and followed with another 3-0 shutout over Carolina Elite Soccer Academy ('94b) Premier from South Carolina. The goals in the two matches came from Evan Dyacaza, Kye Rhode, Dominic Finelli and three from Eric O'Brien. Goalkeepers Bardia Asefnia and Grant Bishop had the shutouts.
Wilson Explosion Preseason Tournament: Three CASL Classic teams participated in the Preseason Wilson Explosion Round Robin Tournament in Wilson this weekend.
The Girls U-15 ('95) Spartan Elite Black team played up a year and dominated its competition, going 4-0. The U-15 Girls beat Onslow Classic Soccer Association from 9-0, Wilson Soccer Club 2-1, CASL Rebels 8-0, and CASL Mercury 5-0.
The U-14 Girls ('96) Spartan Elite Black, also playing a year up, won its division with four shutout wins, beating Johnston United Soccer Association of Johnston County 8-0, Havelock Youth Soccer Association of NC 2-0, East Wake Soccer Association in Knightdale 2-0, and Wilson Soccer Club 5-0.
The Boys U-17 ('93) United squad went 1-2-1, defeating FSC Force United 6-0, and fell to Johnston United Soccer Association Red 3-0 and SSL Shockwave United 2-1. The Boys U-17 team played to a draw with ('97) East Wake Soccer Association Crew 0-0.
Triangle Futbol wins Charlotte Invitational: Over the Weekend, Triangle Futbol Club U-12 Boys ('98) Cosmos won the 9th Annual Charlotte Invitational Boys Weekend bronze bracket after defeating U-12 Boys ('98) Highlands Football Club from Asheville 5-2.
Coached by Reginald Lerebours, the ('98) TFC Cosmos defeated Charlotte Soccer Academy (CSA) Samba Select 9-0 in its opening match and followed that with a 9-0 win over CSA Mundial Elite. In the semifinal fixture, it defeated CSA Mundial Select 2-1 to reach the final.
"I am proud of the team's accomplishments. The final was a difficult game for them. They won the match under heavy rain and in spite of nagging injuries sustained by two key players," Lerebours said.
