Regarding AdvancED's review of the Wake school board's actions since December (news story, Aug. 18), the leaders of the new board majority are preparing to thumb their noses at this powerful accreditation group that gives our students an advantage in college admittance, loans and scholarships.
Chairman Ron Margiotta questions AdvancED's authority and calls its actions political, and John Tedesco threatens not to cooperate. They don't appear to care that by their rushed "we can do anything we want without studying the consequences" attitude they are putting all of our children's future livelihoods and happiness in jeopardy.
College and loan access can significantly change the course of an individual's life. Just ask Tedesco - he's more than happy to tell you that education was key to his rise from poverty. Unfortunately, he and Margiotta may be making college further out of reach for the students in Wake County. They seem to be suffering from the delusion that their actions are exempt from real world consequences. Unfortunately, it is our children and our community who are really going to suffer from those consequences. I don't think the majority of their supporters at the polls were voting for that.
