Walgreens has chosen the Triangle as one of three markets in which it is heavily promoting its new 90-day prescription program. The service allows customers to receive 90-day supplies of certain medications at a Walgreens pharmacy as an alternative to getting medications through mail-order services.

The 90-day program is available at Walgreens pharmacies nationwide. However, the company has chosen the Triangle, Minneapolis and Tampa Bay, Fla., for an additional awareness campaign. Pharmacists in those areas received extra training that will help them counsel customers. Walgreens also is reaching out to doctors and businesses in those three markets to make them aware of the program.

The program is designed to directly address the concerns of consumers who are being pushed toward mail-order prescription services but do not want to lose one-on-one interaction with a local pharmacist. Walgreens says that a person's insurance will determine whether their drug is eligible for the 90-day plan but that eight out of 10 prescriptions do qualify.
