DURHAM -- The Durham Performing Arts Center has earned its host city $1.2 million after two years of existence.
A preliminary, unaudited financial statement released by the city on Thursday revealed that the DPAC took in $2.9 million for the financial period ended June 30. An operating agreement between the Durham Performing Arts Center and Durham means the city pockets 40 percent of that amount. The cash will go to the DPAC Fund, which is used for maintenance and improvements to the building.
The Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the DPAC brought in $24 million during the 2009 season, with 320,000 guests attending 175 events. Sixty-one of those events sold out. The venue hosted Broadway plays, concerts, comedians and family shows.
