Bye, bye, board

We've had it. Reading that today's rising fifth-graders may be the first class to experience any kind of real benefit from what the Wake County school board is doing, if we follow suit with Charlotte, was enough. The instability and blatant disregard for families and children have forced us to make a life-changing decision.

My teenagers will no longer get up at 4:45 a.m. in order to catch a bus at 5:45 a.m. for classes that start at 7:35 a.m. My fourth-grader will no longer be on a different vacation schedule from his three older siblings. My husband and I will no longer worry about where our children will be assigned whenever the board gets its act together.

How is this change possible? Just over the Va./N.C. border, in a small town on a lake, close enough so my husband can still commute to RTP and we can have peace of mind for our family's future.

Sorry, but the Wake County school board forced our hand. It will be interesting in a few years to see whether there is a trend to our exodus.
