Have John Tedesco and members of his Student Assignment Committee actually looked at the plan they proposed? In less than 10 minutes, I noted several areas of concern. First, there are two high school zones, Athens Drive and Broughton, that have no year-round options at either the elementary school or middle school levels, and one zone, Middle Creek, has no traditional option for either elementary or middle school. What happened to not forcing a school calendar on families?
When looking at the five larger regions, there continue to be glaring disparities. The East, West and South regions have seven, 11 and 12 year-round elementary schools respectively, and each has three year-round middle schools. The North region has nine year-round elementary schools feeding into a single year-round middle school. Meanwhile, the Central Zone has only two year-round elementary schools (with only one currently built) and no year-round middle schools.
Wake County has 40 year-round elementary schools and 10 year-round middle schools. Why are they not distributed throughout the regions more evenly? Before Tedesco comments on the speck in the eye of the old student assignments, perhaps he should examine the plank in his own.
