RALEIGH -- Police pulled over a suspected drunken driver early Thursday and ended up arresting two young Raleigh mothers on child abuse charges after two children were found in the back seat.
Brittney Simmons, 20, of 1628 Belafonte Drive, and Kendra Nicole Covington, 22, of 2020 Southgate Drive, were both charged with misdemeanor child abuse, according to arrest warrants filed with the Wake County Magistrate's Office.
Neither child was properly secured in the back seat, the arrest documents state.
Simmons was also cited for driving while impaired, arrest documents state.
Raleigh police stopped a 1998 Oldsmobile driven by Simmons near the intersection of North Raleigh Boulevard and Milburnie Road about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, documents state.
Police said that Simmons wasdisheveled and unable to stand up, and that her breath alcohol level was listed as 0.15; the legal threshold is 0.08.
The ages of the children in the back seat were not clear, but police noted that Simmons' child was unsecured in the back seat and Covington's child was not properly restrained in a child safety seat.
Covington was released from the Wake County jail after posting bail. Simmons remained in the Wake County jail Thursday, her bail set at $1,500.
It was not clear who took custody of the children.
