Browns rookie running back Montario Hardesty is out for the season after tearing a left knee ligament during his NFL debut.
Team spokesman Neal Gulkis said Hardesty is being placed on injured reserve. Gulkis confirmed Friday that the former New Bern High School and Tennessee star tore his left anterior cruciate ligament when he cut on a 2-yard run in Thursday night's exhibition game against Chicago.
It was Hardesty's first game with Cleveland after missing training camp with a bone bruise in his right knee. Before getting hurt, Hardesty ran for 25 yards on seven carries and scored a 1-yard touchdown in the Browns' 13-10 win over the Bears.
Hardesty has a history of knee problems. He tore his right anterior cruciate ligament as a freshman at Tennessee in 2005.
The Browns had high hopes for Hardesty, who rushed for 1,345 yards last season for the Volunteers. Cleveland traded three picks to move up in the draft and select him in the second round.
Thornton still recovering: Tennessee will place linebacker David Thornton on the physically-unable-to-perform list as the Titans trim their roster, giving him at least six more weeks to heal up his surgically-repaired hip.
The former University of North Carolina linebacker also had offseason surgery on his left shoulder after being limited to 11 starts last season. He is due $4.3 million in salary this season.
Broncos' White will miss season: The Denver Broncos' tailback turnstile keeps on spinning.
LenDale White is out for the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon Thursday night at Minnesota. White will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
Giants trade for Rosenfels: The New York Giants have acquired quarterback Sage Rosenfels from the Minnesota Vikings for an undisclosed draft pick.
The Vikings announced the deal, which also includes running back Darius Reynaud, on their website Friday night.
The Giants lost backup Jim Sorgi with a shoulder injury and he was placed on injured reserve, leaving untested Rhett Bomar as the only other quarterback. Now Rosenfels will back up Eli Manning.
Rosenfels was third string behind Brett Favre and Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota.
Cowboys send Crayton to Chargers: The Dallas Cowboys have traded receiver Patrick Crayton to San Diego and offensive lineman Pat McQuistan to Miami for future considerations.
The Cowboys gave Crayton permission to seek a trade after they took Dez Bryant in the first round of April's NFL draft. He missed most of the voluntary offseason workouts and indicated he wanted to be released from a contract that runs through next season.
The acquisition of McQuistan gives the Dolphins more depth in the offensive line. Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long hurt his left knee during Thursday's game at Dallas. Long left the game but walked afterward without a limp.
Cardinals send guard to Eagles: The Arizona Cardinals have traded starting guard Reggie Wells to the Philadelphia Eagles for an undisclosed draft pick.
Wells had started the last 90 games for Arizona, dating to the 2003 season, as well as the team's six postseason games, but was moved from left guard to right guard this year following the signing of free agent Alan Faneca.
