WENDELL -- Millbrook quarterback Trey McFarland had a pep talk with his team with the Wildcats trailing by a touchdown early in the third period.
"I told them that we had to do something," McFarland said after Friday's 49-21 victory over East Wake. "We were making some of the same mistakes that we made last year, and we needed to score every down."
His teammates responded by scoring 42 straight points.
McFarland accounted for five touchdowns with two touchdowns to wide receiver Cory Cooper and three rushing touchdowns.
"Cory is my go-to guy," McFarland said. "When I need a first down, he's the one that I look to."
While the offense was taking care of business, the defense was putting the clamps on the Warriors. East Wake was held to 82 rushing yards in the game, including 28 in the first half.
The Warriors scored on their second possession of the game. Running back Mike Engles ran 15 yards for the game's first score.
With 5:10 left in the first half, Millbrook needed five plays to cover 74 yards. McFarland ran for 50 yards in the drive. Keith Marshall tied the score with a 20-yard run with 4:00 left in the first half.
"Our offense sputtered in the first half and put the pressure on our defense," Millbrook coach Clarence Inscore said. "But they are a veteran group of kids."
