SMITHFIELD -- Smithfield-Selma and Fayetteville Pine Forest came into their meeting Friday night, each in search of its first win of the season. Smithfield-Selma emerged with a 23-17 win in overtime.

The Spartans' Tre'vonn Reddick scored on a 10-yard run on the first play of Smithfield-Selma's possession in overtime. Pine Forest started with the ball in overtime, but Smithfield-Selma's Kyle Williams raced into the Pine Forest backfield to intercept a pitch. He fell down on the play and SSS took over.

"I'm glad for our kids," SSS coach Frank Lassiter said. "We needed that. We fought hard."

SSS tied the score at 17-17 when Denandre Parker scrambled 24 yards for a TD with 6:19 left in the game.

Pine Forest missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt in the final 15 seconds of the game.
