What a difference at the Aug. 26 meeting of the Wake County Schools Economically Disadvantaged Student Performance Taskforce. I could not believe the positive tone and cooperative spirit shown at the meeting. How can we transfer the thoughtfulness and ideas and cooperation to the Student Assignment Committee and Wake County school board?

My answer is let the Wake school system's professional employees, teachers, principals and other academic leaders, with some community input, make decisions for the schools about what is needed for improvement. I continue to be immensely impressed by the high-level competency of the Wake schools' central office, as well as school principals and teachers.

So how can the economically disadvantaged group of students be maximally helped without a positive diversity (balance) policy? Seems that most people at the taskforce meeting talked about how the ED students require many services to achieve success. Returning to our past diversity method of balancing student populations will help the ED students achieve the success that all of Wake County residents desire. The ideas discussed will make a tremendous new impact on an already excellent school system.
