ASHEBORO -- - North Carolina Zoo officials say a female lion has been euthanized after veterinarians determined she would not recover from cancer.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that the 12-year-old lion was diagnosed with mammary cancer two weeks ago. Senior veterinarian Ryan DeVoe said the cancer had metastasized to its lungs, and she was suffering.

The lion had been at the zoo since 2002.

It had been transferred from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas.

The zoo says its 9-year-old male lion remains on exhibit and is in good health.
