SAS Championship | Fred Couples | golf | Cary Prestonwood -- With six World Golf Hall of Famers committed for the SAS Championship on Sept. 24-26, tournament official on Wednesday added Fred Couples to the list of legends.
Couples arrives at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary with golfers Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange, Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Nick Price and Larry Nelson, among others who compete on the Champions Tour, a subsidiary of the PGA Tour for players age 50 and over.
Couples, 50, became eligible for the Champions Tour last year, though officially began his rookie season this year while continuing to play on the PGA Tour.
The 1992 Masters champion finished sixth at Augusta in April, shooting an opening-round 66 and becoming the oldest player in tournament history to hold the outright lead after the first round.
His career earnings surpass $21 million and he boasts a current scoring average of 70.25.
Fred Couples throughout his career on the PGA Tour has been a figure that gets peoples attention, SAS Championship tournament director Jeff Kleiber said. People are excited to come out and watch him. Id never put him in the same category as Arnold Palmer, but hes probably the most significant commitment for somebody who hasnt played our event that we have this year.
