RALEIGH -- George Washington the reality show is coming to Raleigh.
You knew the first president was more than just a politician and a general. He had a life. Now you can see him up close - as close as his dentures! - in a traveling exhibition at the N.C. Museum of History that opens Friday.
"Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon" is actually far less sensational than all that. It was organized, after all, by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association.
But visitors will find:
Three life-size figures of Washington based on cutting-edge forensic research, showing him at different stages of his life: as a young surveyor, as commander in chief of the Continental army and as our first president.
Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of Washington, circa 1798.
The family Bible from Washington's personal library.
Surveying equipment and maps used by Washington.
The only surviving complete set of Washington's famous dentures, made of ivory, human teeth and animal teeth.
Meet the missus: Insight into Mrs. Washington's tastes is offered through original jewelry, pieces of her china, silver, glassware and reproductions of her gold wedding dress and purple satin slippers.
It's in the details: You can dig deep into the life of Washington through videos and a big three-dimensional model of Mount Vernon, with computer touch screens. There's a full-size replica of his church pew and scale models of Fort Necessity, a gristmill and a barn.
Always a local connection: The North Carolina history museum staff has produced a section about Washington's ties to this state, including his work as a surveyor in the Great Dismal Swamp in 1763 and his 1791 campaign tour here.
