DURHAM -- A former Durham County sheriff's lieutenant accused of stealing nearly $100,000 from the department was indicted Tuesday on embezzlement and other charges.
Derek O'Mary, a former narcotics supervisor, surrendered to State Bureau of Investigation officers Wednesday, according to Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman with the state Attorney General's Office.
He was charged with:
25 counts of embezzlement of county funds, a total of $96,976 between July 2003 and April 2009.
One count of embezzlement of drug evidence.
One count of felony obstruction.
One count of felony possession of cocaine (the last two in connection with embezzling the drug evidence).
According to a sheriff's release, narcotics detectives under O'Mary told the department that he was mismanaging funds on March 30, 2009.
O'Mary was fired April 9, 2009.
The Sheriff's Office has reviewed its cash-handling procedures and taken steps to improve oversight, according to the release.
