Although I strongly disagree with the direction of the Wake County school board majority, sometimes my heart goes out to the average voter who must have elected them. All that many of them wanted was an end to frequent school reassignments, which would cause any parent great distress. Instead, their legitimate grievances were hijacked by a far-right agenda that, through its proposed 16 assignment zones, will effectively institute a racial quarantine in the Southeast/ downtown section of Raleigh, grouping the majority of poor, minority children in one zone. Because the resulting disparity between the zones would violate both law and morality, their radical agenda threatens the accreditation of the entire Wake school system.
If we lose our accreditation, it will have a major and immediate effect on each and every public school student's probability of being admitted to college. It would also affect a high school graduate's job prospects. This cannot be the change the voters were hoping for! If we have any sense of community left, that we're all in this together, we need to reject any policy change that causes us to lose our accreditation.
