DURHAM -- N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarah Parker has appointed Marcia H. Morey as chief District Court judge for Judicial District 14, serving Durham County.

Morey will succeed Judge Elaine Bushfan, whose term expires at the end of this year.

Morey has served as a District Court judge for more than 11 years. In addition to serving on the bench, Morey will take over Bushfan's administrative duties, overseeing six other judges.

Morey, 55, was co-captain of the 1976 U.S. Olympic swim team. She graduated from Northwestern School of Law in 1978 and later worked as an assistant district attorney in Durham. Before becoming a judge in 1999, she was executive director of the Governor's Commission on Juvenile Crime and Justice.

"I am confident that under Judge Morey's leadership all the District Court judges will continue to work diligently to ensure the fair and efficient administration of justice," Parker said.
