Usually, when you think about a walk or run for a charity or cause, you presume there will be at least 5 kilometers to cover. But this weekend, you can walk a mere 1.2 miles at the Triangle Walk for Moms and Midwives and raise money to increase the birthing options for all North Carolinians.
The family-friendly walk, hosted by the N.C. Friends of Midwives, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake Benson Park in Garner. Registration starts at 9 a.m.
It's family friendly not only because of the modest distance - ideal for strollers, scooters, bikes and parents who are doing some extra cardio by carrying their children - but also because the loop circles around a playground that can be seen at all times.
"There are going to be some kids that are like, 'Eh, I'm not leaving the playground,'" says Amber Craig, coordinator for the walk. If that happens, one parent can stay with the children while the other still represents the fam and puts in the mileage.
The NCFOM is hoping to raise awareness about its efforts to see legislation passed that permits the licensing and regulation of Certified Professional Midwives in North Carolina. As of now, one has to be a Certified Nurse Midwife, which requires a nursing degree.
"All pregnant women deserve safe birth choices and complete information to make the best birthing decisions for themselves," Craig says. It's really about having more options.
There are about 260 people registered for the walk - the first of its kind. Whole Foods is donating fruit and water, and the Open Eye Café is providing free coffee. There will also be face painting and LocoPops available for purchase.
Individuals can participate for $20, which includes a T-shirt and participant bag full of goodies - like pregnant belly salve, magnets and pens - from the sponsors. Families can register for $40, which gets you a participant bag and up to four T-shirts. Additional tees can be purchased for $5, and sizes range from 12 months to adult 3X.
