The Carolina RailHawks fell to the Montreal Impact 1-0 in Game 1 of their USSF D-2 Pro League soccer series.
On a cold, wet Thursday night in Montreal. RailHawks forward Tom Heinemann appeared to score the tying goal in the 79th minute, but he was flagged for offside.
The RailHawks return home down 1-0 on aggregate and will close out the semifinals on Sunday at 6 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
The Impact scored the game's lone goal in the 35th minute when a free kick from Leonardo Di Lorenzo found the left corner of the net. The free kick came just outside the box, and Di Lorenzo was able to slip it past the wall and RailHawks goalkeeper Eric Reed.
"In the first half Montreal played really well, and we didn't play as well as we would have liked to," RailHawks coach Martin Rennie said. "But in the second half we improved a lot and had some chances to win the game, and we had a good goal from what we could see that was given offsides, and that was disappointing."
The teams combined for six yellow cards and 28 fouls in a physical game.
Canadian doctor indicted
A high-profile Canadian sports doctor charged earlier this year with smuggling unapproved drugs into the United States to treat professional athletes was formally indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Buffalo, N.Y.
The five-count indictment alleges that Dr. Anthony Galea, 51, of Toronto, smuggled human growth hormone and other unapproved substances into the U.S. and conspired and lied to border agents to avoid getting caught.
The charges, similar to those contained in a criminal complaint in May, set Galea on the path to trial.
The doctor, who is not authorized to work in the United States, is accused of treating 20 professional athletes at their homes, hotels and friends' houses from October 2007 to September 2009, including giving them free Viagra if they asked.
The indictment does not identify any athletes by name, but as the case moves toward trial, evidence and witness statements could be revealed in court, said U.S. Attorney William Hochul, whose office is prosecuting the case.

LeBron James is the only athlete named on Fortune's list of this year's "40 Under 40" stars in the business world.
The Miami Heat forward and two-time reigning NBA MVP was ranked No. 20 on the list, which took into account both his earning power on and off the floor (an estimated $42.4 million this year) and the attention he generated during the free agency process this summer.

F1 headed to Russia in 2014
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says Russia has reached a deal with Formula One to host a Grand Prix race near the Black Sea resort of Sochi beginning in 2014.
Putin made the statement before meeting Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone in Sochi, which is also hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. Ecclestone and Russian officials plans to sign the deal later Thursday.
Russia has tried to get on the F1 circuit before, but former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov failed to reach an agreement with Ecclestone in 2002 to use the city as a venue.
The deal is believed to come at a cost to the Russians of at least $40 million per year for five years, including an option to extend for another five.
