The Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday recalled defenseman Brett Carson from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.
Carson joined the Canes in Vancouver, where they will face the Canucks today.
Carson, 24, traveled with the Hurricanes to the NHL Premiere in Finland but was a healthy extra in the first two regular-season games. He then was assigned Oct. 9 to the Checkers and played in three AHL games.
Carson has played in 59 NHL games scoring two goals and 10 assists, all with the Canes.
Sharks sign Joe Thornton to extension: The San Jose Sharks have signed captain Joe Thornton to a $21 million, three-year contract extension.
The team announced Saturday the deal to keep its top player under contract through 2013-14. Thornton was recently named captain for San Jose. He has been one of the top players in the league since joining the Sharks in a trade with Boston in November 2005.
His 479 points since joining the Sharks are the third most in the NHL during that span. Only Alex Ovechkin with 511 and Sidney Crosby with 481 have more.
Ducks put Lilja on active roster: The Anaheim Ducks have put defenseman Andreas Lilja on the active roster and assigned defenseman Luca Sbisa to their AHL affiliate in Syracuse.
The Ducks made the moves Saturday after Lilja received his work visa.
Sbisa went scoreless in two games with the Ducks this season. The Swiss defenseman hasn't won a full-time NHL job during parts of three seasons with Philadelphia and Anaheim.
The Ducks signed Lilja on Monday. The longtime Detroit Red Wings defenseman went to training camp with San Jose.
Blue Jackets place Boll on injured list: The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed forward Jared Boll on the injured list and added defenseman Nate Guenin to the roster on emergency recall from the Springfield Falcons of the AHL.
The team also announced Saturday that forward Tomas Kana was taken off the injured list and assigned to Springfield.
Boll was hurt in Columbus' Oct. 8 season opener against the San Jose Sharks in Stockholm.
NHL happy with Coyotes' lease: The NHL is praising the lease agreement between Chicago investor Matthew Hulsizer and the city of Glendale, saying it will "finally lead to the transition of ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes."
The city announced Friday that it had reached an agreement in principle with Hulsizer on a new lease for the team to play in the Jobing.com Arena.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement Saturday that the league was "very pleased" that the two sides "appear to have reached an agreement."
Capitals recall Fahey: The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Brian Fahey on Saturday from the Hershey Bears of the AHL.
Fahey was drafted out of Wisconsin in the fourth round, 119th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in 2000.
