Gurnie Patricia "Pat" Stancil Crabtree

Gurnie Patricia "Pat" Stancil Crabtree, 97, was gathered up on angels’ wings on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, surrounded by her family and caregivers. She was born in Johnston County on October 27, 1913 to the late James Oscar and Allie Edwards Stancil. She was married to Jack Crabtree on November 12, 1938.

She was predeceased in death by her husband, Jack; brothers, Guy and Rudolph Stancil; sister, Ruth Stancil Janiuk; special mother, Mamie Hocutt Stancil, Mary House Stancil; grandsons, Shayne and Todd Crabtree; sisters-in-law, Frances Stancil Peoples, Hattie Stancil, and Betty Stancil; brothers-in-law, Stanley Janiuk and Robert Crabtree; and niece, Pamela Janiuk Weaver.

Survived are sons, Charles M. “Bo” Crabtree and wife, Cindi of Cary, NC, Guy W. Crabtree of Durham, NC; daughter, Jane C. O’Brien of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Stephanie O’Brien and partner, Jennifer Gatti of Asheville, NC, Windi C. Quinby and husband, Kyle of Garner, NC, and Andrew and Ashley Crabtree of Durham, NC; great-grandchildren, Kayla Pounds and Christopher Quinby of Garner, NC; and daughter-in-law Debbie Crabtree of Durham, NC. Surviving brothers, James O. Stancil of Virginia Beach, VA, Jack R. Stancil and wife, Lynda of Kaneohe, Hawaii; sister, Ruby S. Creech and husband, Grover of Smithfield, NC; sisters-in-law, Dot Stancil of Covington, VA and Jean M. Crabtree of Norfolk, VA. Special extended family caregivers, Yvonne Johnson, Autrey Roper and Helen Green.

Mrs. Crabtree was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, for 72 years, and a member of the choir for 55 years. Moving to Durham in 1936 she earned her business degree from Hardbargers Business School. She was a member of the first class of the Duke University School of Nursing. After her nursing career she became office manager at Hobby Plumbing Co., and Ace Distributing Co., and in her retirement years worked at the Durham County Tax Office during tax season until she was 75. She was an avid UNC Tarheels fan.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Duke Hospice staff and the staff of the Carolina House, for making mom’s last year so comfortable.

A funeral service will be held Friday 11:00 a.m. at Bethany U.M.C. by the Rev. Jimmy Weaver. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
