Sampson County tally confirms Etheridge-Ellmers vote totals

Staff writerNovember 4, 2010

A state Board of Elections review of vote totals in Sampson County Thursday left incumbent Congressman Bob Etheridge within the range that would allow him to formally request a recount.

Etheridge, who has represented the state’s 2nd Congressional District since 1996, trails challenger Renee Ellmers by just under 1 percent of the votes cast.

If that gap doesn’t widen to more than 1 percent after the county election boards in the district certify their vote totals as official on Nov. 12, the state has to perform a recount if Etheridge requests it, and he said in a news conference Wednesday that he would.
