PITTSBURGH — The Carolina Hurricanes paid their first visit Friday to Consol Energy Center, the Pittsburgh Penguins' new digs.

They'd probably say they liked the Pens' old place better.

In the first game decided by a shootout in the new building, the Penguins won 5-4.

Jussi Jokinen's goal with 51.4 seconds left in regulation gave the Hurricanes a 4-4 tie. Both goalies, Justin Peters and of the Canes and Marc-Andre Fleury of the Penguins, then made some nifty saves in overtime.

In the shootout, Kris Letang beat Peters with a backhander and Sidney Crosby with a shot through Peters pads. Fleury stopped Jeff Skinner's forehand and then Jokinen's attempt to end it.

Jokinen had two goals and two assists for the Canes, while Crosby led the Pens with a goal and three assists and Chris Kunitz scored twice. Jokinen's second goal of the game came after Carolina pulled Peters for an extra attacker.

In overtime, Fluery stopped an early shot by Jeff Skinner, then a deflection by Eric Staal in front of the net. He also made a save on a Skinner wraparound with 1:36 left in OT.

Peters then stopped Crosby with 29 seconds left, gloving Crosby's backhander.

Kunitz had given the Pens a 4-3 lead with 10:41 left in regulation on a power-play goal that ended in a review that went the Pens way. Kunitz whacked a shot that slipped under Peters and then over the goal line -- but apparently after the referee's whistle.

The play was reviewed and Kunitz's goal stood. It appeared the Pens then would win in regulation -- until Jokinen struck.

For two periods, it was a fast-paced, well-played hockey game, with any number of scoring chances for both teams.

Crosby, constantly on the attack, gave the Pens a 3-2 lead in the second with his 14th goal of the season. But Jokinen answered for the Canes with his first goal in 12 games -- and third point of the game -- for a tie.

The Canes were fresh off a 7-1 beating of the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. That was a bounce-back game for Carolina after the 8-1 loss to Philadelphia and 7-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, and Cam Ward had 23 saves in the victory.

Canes coach Paul Maurice elected to give Peters his third start of the season rather than start Ward for an eighth straight time. Part of it was Peters' record against the Pens last season — he was 2-0-0 -- and part of tonight's home game against the Nashville Predators, which Ward will start.

It was 2-2 after the first as Brandon Sutter and Patrick Dwyer scored for the Canes, offsetting goals by Kunitz and Tyler Kennedy for the Pens that had the building rumbling.

Sutter struck 42 seconds into the game, finishing off a well-executed rush with Jokinen, who had two assists in the game, and Joni Pitkanen. Dwyer's goal, late in the period, came after he got inside position on Crosby near the post and popped a loose puck past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

The Pens' two first-period goals came when they beat the Canes down ice in numbers, and Crosby figured in both.

Crosby passed to Evgeni Malkin, who fed an unchecked Kunitz on the right wing for the first of his three assists. A little more than two minutes later, Crosby chipped the puck away from Eric Staal in the neutral zone to start a three-on-one that led to Kennedy getting an easy tap-in.

Canes defenseman Ian White put a shot on goal, with Jokinen tying up defenseman Paul Martin in front of Fleury. Dwyer hustled in to get the loose puck and the goal.

White was playing his first game for the Hurricanes after being obtained in a trade Wednesday with the Calgary Flames. white arrived in Pittsburgh late Thursday night and did not meet his new teammates until Friday morning.

The Pens shut out the Canes 3-0 when the two teams first played, Oct. 30 in Raleigh. Brent Johnson started that game in goal for Pittsburgh and had 33 saves, but a resurgent Fleury made his fifth straight start Friday after going 3-0-1 in the last four.

In the past the Canes played well in the "Igloo." This was something new, something different, in a beautiful arena with all the amenities and little of the feel and character of the old place, Mellon Arena.
