A 3-year-old Rolesville boy has helped spur a national nonprofit organization to victory in an online grant competition worth $250,000.

Matthew Wuchich, 3, was diagnosed with alternating hemiplegia of childhood when he was 18 months old. He appears in a promotional video for the AHC Foundation, which just won November’s Pepsi Refresh competition.

The group started Nov. 1 with a ranking of 235. By the middle of November, it jumped to third place, just one spot away from being a winner. And early Wednesday morning, the group received official word that it had finished second in votes. The top two vote-getters will receive the grant.

The grant money will be used toward research into curing the disease, which causes sporadic paralysis in one or all limbs. Doctors currently know neither the cause nor a cure.
