The News & Observer’s Holiday Giving Guide is a searchable database of area charities. Donors can use it to match their donations of money, clothing, food, furniture or volunteer services to the organization needing them most. This list contains only a sampling of more than 120 participating charities.

Before you donate

Ask for the charity’s name, address, and written information on the charity’s programs and finances. Is it a licensed nonprofit?

Watch for cases of mistaken identity. Some charity names sound alike. Be careful that the one soliciting you is the one you have in mind.

Know how much of your donation actually goes where it’s needed. Ask or look for a disclosure that states how much will go to the charity’s programs, compared to how much is paid to the company the charity has contracted to raise funds.

Watch out for charity fraud. Legitimate charities willingly provide written information about their programs and finances. They never insist you provide your credit card number or bank account number.

Check them out

The Better Business Bureau lists the financial data of charities that meet its wise giving standards for charitable accountability.

The N.C. Secretary of State’s office licenses most charities or professional fundraising organizations operating in this state and keeps a searchable database of each organization’s financial information. Information also can be obtained by e-mailing csl@sosnc.com or calling 888-830-4989 toll free.
