Shih-Chin "Nancy" Hu, age 76, died peacefully near midnight on December 4, 2010 at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital. She was surrounded by her husband and children. Shih-Chin was born to Mien-Nan Sung and Tso-Yan Liu on January 21, 1934 in Harbin, China.
Mrs. Hu is survived by her husband, Ping-Chuan (Ed) Hu; two children, Dorothy Huang and husband, Bao-Sheng of Bridgewater, NJ and Son Robert Hu and wife, Monica of Hillsborough, NJ; three grandchildren - Michelle Huang, Lizbeth Hu and Caroline Hu; four sisters, Dorothy Lin of Houston, TX, Marion Popeske of Winchester, VA, Joyce Shizuya of South Pasadena, CA, Shih-Yi Yu of Taichung, Taiwan; and two brothers, Richard Sung of Foster City, CA, Robert Sung of Bellevue, WA; several nieces and nephews.
Shih-Chin received her bachelor’s degree in Botany from National Taiwan University in 1956 and her master’s degree in Botany from North Dakota State University in 1968. She met her husband, Ping-Chuan Hu, in college. They married on Sept 1, 1957 and soon started a family, Dorothy born in 1958 and Robert in 1961. After moving to Chapel Hill in 1973, Shih-Chin worked as a research analyst in the department of pediatrics of the University of North Carolina Medical School for 25 years, until her retirement in 1998.
