Wolfpack can't keep pace

From NCSU News ReleaseDecember 13, 2010

— Short-handed N.C. State fell behind by 20 points in the first half en route to a 77-63 loss Sunday to South Carolina in women's basketball.

The Wolfpack (4-6) was missing two of its top frontcourt players. Freshman Kody Burke turned an ankle in practice Saturday and didn't suit up. Lakeesa Daniel was out with an injury suffered two games ago at Illinois.

Add to that early foul trouble for Bonae Holston, who was scoreless in six first-half minutes, and the offensive end of the court turned into a major struggle for the Wolfpack, which saw the Gamecocks (5-4) take a 25-4 lead.

The lead grew to 22 points, 28-6, at 5:44 before N.C. State found some continuity on offense with Amber White, whose 15 first-half points kept the Wolfpack within 37-22 by halftime.

A 13-3 run out of intermission cut the deficit to 40-35 with 15:25 left. The Wolfpack twice got the margin to four points, the second time at 64-60 on a second-chance runner by Emili Tasler with 4 minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Pack would get.

La'Keisha Sutton's three-point play highlighted a 10-0 run for the Gamecocks as they pulled away to a 74-60 lead.

White led all scorers with 22 points, while Sutton paced South Carolina with 18 and Maryland transfer Marah Strickland added 17.
