An early 15-2 lead didn't prevent Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski from working the officials. He requested an explanation of a foul against Mason Plumlee that he must have thought was a clean blocked shot.
Minutes later, Krzyzewski was disappointed with a charging call against Kyle Singler.
"Come on, man," Krzyzewski protested.
His intensity wasn't diminished in the least as he pursued the 880th win of his career.
The most unusual reaction to Krzyzewski's 880th win came from directly across the court.
A fan sitting across from Krzyzewski held a huge photograph of Dean Smith, the former North Carolina coach who had 879 career wins. The fan cut a slot in the mouth of the photo and slid a red facsimile of a tongue through it, continuously wagging the tongue as though Smith were taunting Krzyzewski for the entire game.
Duke sophomore Mason Plumlee missed a start for the first time this season as Miles Plumlee and Ryan Kelly started in the frontcourt.
Mason Plumlee had totaled just seven points in 54 minutes over his previous three games.
All of Duke's post players continue to have difficulty hanging on to the ball on rebounds; fumbles by Miles Plumlee and Kelly appeared to frustrate Krzyzewski at the second media timeout.
Krzyzewski shared a warm embrace with UNC Greensboro coach Mike Dement.
In 1982-83, Krzyzewski got Dement started in college coaching, bringing him on as a volunteer assistant.
