RALEIGH -- A 42-year-old Raleigh man is facing numerous sex charges involving children, including the assault of a 7-year-old at a Garner store during the Christmas shopping season.

Mark Canary, of 740 Bashford Road, is charged with one count of indecent liberties with a child, one count of indecent exposure, one count of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to arrest warrants filed in the Wake County Magistrate's Office.

In the first case, Canary is accused of exposing his genitals to a 7-year-old in a Garner Walmart on Dec. 20. The store, at 4500 Fayetteville Rd, has a Raleigh postal address. Garner police also accuse Canary of committing and attempting to commit a lewd and lascivious act on the child.

In the second case, Canary is accused of using a 9-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity for the purpose of making a visual recording, the warrant states. Raleigh police said in the warrant that they believe Canary exploited the child on Wednesday.

The News & Observer generally does not identify people who report sexual assaults.

Canary is being held in the Wake County jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
