As newspapers continue to look for ways to profit from their online operations, seven newspapers owned by The McClatchy Co., including The News & Observer, are signing on to test a news aggregation website.

Ongo.com started this week with backing from The New York Times Co, The Washington Post Co. and Gannett. Each contributed $4 million to the project.

Unlike other free aggregators, Ongo.com will feature full stories without making readers click to visit another website. Content will be arranged in an easy-to-read column format similar to a traditional printed paper.

Users will pay $6.99 a month for a selection of stories from national newspapers. They may then add news outlets for fees from 99 cents to $14.99 each.

So far, seven McClatchy papers in Raleigh; Charlotte; Anchorage, Alaska; Sacramento, Calif; Fort Worth, Texas; Kansas City, Mo., and Miami are participating. McClatchy officials plan to evaluate the success of the program over the next six months.
