Thomas Warwick Steed, Jr.

Thomas Warwick Steed, Jr. died suddenly at home on Friday morning, February 4, 2011.

He was born in Raleigh, NC on March 24, 1930 to the late Thomas Warwick Steed and Winnie Mae Adams Steed. He graduated from Broughton High School and UNC-Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in Business. While at UNC-Chapel Hill he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa. He received a JD from UNC Law School where he was editor-in-chief of the North Carolina Law Review and was honored with Order of the Coif. He served in the US Army where he received a Commendation Medal by the President of the United States while in the JAG for his service.

He practiced law in Raleigh for over 50 years. He was past president of the Wake County Bar, Kiwanis Club of Raleigh, Raleigh Little Theater, Tammy Lynn Center, Sphinx Club, and NC Board of Law Examiners. He was also a member of a number of groups, including Good Old Boys, Carolina Country Club, Coral Bay Club, Terpsichorean Club, and Boy Scouts of America. He was a founding member of the Foundation of Hope. He loved tennis, sailing, playing the piano, and spending his summers with his family at Atlantic Beach.

Tom was a devoted Christian and an active member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and was member of many Bible Study groups.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Margaret; sons: Thomas Warwick Steed III and wife Beth of Rocky Mount, McKenzie Bradford Steed III and wife Cathy of Raleigh, William Adams Steed and wife Selden of Raleigh, and Durwood Robinson Steed and wife Nancy of Richmond; 10 grandchildren: Elizabeth Paton Steed, Eliza Davidson Steed, Anne Warwick Steed, Catherine Walker Steed, McKenzie Bradford Steed IV, William Gray Steed, Tazewell Adams Steed, Durwood Robinson Steed Jr., and Thomas Nash Steed; and sister Mrs. Charles W. Wray, Jr. of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Barach Joseph Steed.

The service celebrating the life of Mr. Steed will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm., with a visitation immediately following the memorial service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, North Carolina, 27608.
