Tomas Plekanec and Travis Moen scored early in the first and second periods for visiting Montreal, and the Canadiens' Carey Price made 26 saves to shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 on Saturday.
Price notched his eighth shutout and has given up seven goals in starting the past six games.
Montreal has won six of its past seven and sits sixth in the Eastern Conference.
Plekanec scored his 21st goal, second most on the team, 46 seconds into the game, beating Jordan Staal on the faceoff, slipping around Staal and backhanding a pass from Mike Cammalleri behind goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Devils 3, Islanders 2 (OT): Anssi Salmela scored his first goal of the season 3:09 into overtime to give New Jersey's playoff drive another boost with a victory over visiting New York.
Salmela took a feed from Mattias Tedenby and drilled a shot past Al Montoya as the Devils improved to 22-3-2 in their past 27 games. New Jersey had trailed 2-1 in the third period before rallying.
Jacob Josefson had his first NHL goal and David Clarkson also scored, and Martin Brodeur made 13 saves for the Devils.
Blake Comeau and John Tavares scored for New York, which got 32 saves from Montoya.
Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3: Mikhail Grabovski and Phil Kessel scored in a 2:33 span early in the third period, and rookie James Reimer made a jaw-dropping save on Tomas Vanek in the period in Toronto's comeback victory over visiting Buffalo.
Clarke MacArthur and Tyler Bozak also scored to help Toronto end a three-game slide and move back four points shy of the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
Mike Weber, Jochen Hecht and Jordan Leopold scored for Buffalo.

Vincent Levavalier and Simon Gagne scored in the third period for Tampa Bay to erase a 3-1 deficit.
Ryan Carter and Niclas Bergfors each scored their first goals for Florida as the Panthers gained a two-goal cushion earlier in the third period.
The loss sent the Lightning, who are battling with Washington for the top spot in the Southeast Division, to their sixth loss in the past seven games.
Thrashers 5, Flyers 4 (OT): Ron Hainsey scored in overtime for visiting Atlanta, which pulled off a three-goal rally and overcame Ville Leino's hat trick in a victory over Philadelphia.
The Thrashers trailed 3-0 entering the third period after Philadelphia got a pair of goals from Leino and a short-handed tally from defenseman Kimmo Timonen to chase Atlanta goalie Ondrej Pavelec.
Andrew Ladd tied the score 4-4 by scoring with 45 seconds left in regulation. At 1:17 of overtime, Evander Kane carried the puck down the right side, controlled it around a sliding Timonen, and centered a pass to Hainsey, who found room past goalie Sergei Bobrovksy.
Kane, Zach Bogosian and Tobias Enstrom also scored for Atlanta.
