The South Carolina boys and girls all-stars swept both games in the 14th annual Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., over the weekend.

The South Carolina girls took a 64-52 victory over a North Carolina squad coached by Northern Durham's Pam Adams. South Central Pitt's Danielle Butts had 15 points in the loss.

Damien Leonard of Greenville Mann led the South Carolina boys to an 87-84 win. Leonard scored a game-record 35 points, including a winning 3-pointer with five seconds left. He is a University of South Carolina recruit.

Terry Whisnant of Cherryville, a Florida State recruit, led the North Carolina team with 12 points. Princeton's Ben Jacobs had six points and seven rebounds.

Berrios no-hitter: Austin Berrios of Leesville Road tossed a five-inning no-hitter Friday night in a 13-0 Cap Eight 4-A baseball victory over Broughton. Berrios struck out six and walked one. The Pride made one error.

"He mixed his pitches well," Leesville Road coach Chad Smothers said. "He got ahead of hitters and kept them off stride."

Leesville Road (6-0) is at home at 4 p.m. today for a key league game against Wakefield.

Richard Murphy dies: Richard Murphy, a former president of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, died on Saturday.

Murphy was principal when Leesville Road opened, and he assembled a faculty that included some of the top coaches in the state, including current Pride soccer coach Paul Dinkenor.

The late Marshall Hamilton, a well-known boys basketball coach at Broughton High, was the school's first athletic director.

Murphy also was principal at East Wake and Sanderson.

He was an All-American soccer player at Campbell University and is a member of the Camels' Hall of Fame.

Carolina Challenge: Rodney Purvis of Upper Room Academy is expected to lead the participants in Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge on Saturday at Ravenscroft. Purvis is ranked among the top high school junior basketball players in the country and has committed to Louisville.

The Carolina Challenge has attracted most of the top-ranked high school juniors and sophomores in the state.

T.J. Warren and Torian Graham, who led Word of God to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A semifinals, are expected to play in the event as well.

Braxton Ogbueze of United Faith (committed to Florida), Montrezl Harrell of North Edgecombe (Virginia Tech), and Tyler Lewis of Forsyth Country Day (N.C. State) also are on the rosters.

North Johnston coach: Scott Meserve, the North Johnston football defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, has been appointed the Panthers' coach. He succeeds Tom Nelson, who recently became the coach at Wilson Fike.
