The Brittany VII, a girls high school soccer showcase, includes 65 teams playing today and Saturday at the J. Burt Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

Among the six opening games at 5:30 p.m. today are Millbrook vs. Wilmington Laney and East Chapel Hill vs. Winston-Salem Calvary Baptist. Broughton plays Asheville Roberson at 7:30.

On Saturday, six games are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 1:50 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The event honors Brittany Willis, a former Wilson Hunt senior who was abducted and killed while returning a graduation present. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Wilson County seniors.

A schedule is at blogs.news observer.com/prepsnow .

Trojan eighth in nation: Tyler Maher of Garner finished eighth in the National High School Coaches Association Senior Nationals wrestling tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. Maher completed his high school career with a 136-25 record and was runner-up in the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A individual championships.

"It was really different competing on the national level," Maher said. "There were a lot of quality wrestlers there, and I wasn't one of the very best. It was a lot of fun."

Ed McLean gym: The gym at Pleasant Union Elementary in Raleigh will be named today for Ed McLean. He is the former Broughton High boys basketball coach and athletic director who later taught at Pleasant Union for 17 years..

McLean was an assistant coach at N.C. State in 1983 when the Wolfpack won the NCAA title, and he became the head coach at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

Wake County track: The 2K11 Speed Thrills Wake County Track and Field Championships are scheduled for Saturday at Athens Drive High. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., and the running finals are scheduled for 1 p.m.

More than 600 athletes from the Cap Nine, Greater Neuse River and Tri-Nine conferences and from Cardinal Gibbons High are expected.

Pride golfers look strong: The Leesville Road boys golf team is living up to its billing as one of the top teams in the country. The Pride and junior standout Grayson Murray dominated a strong field this week in the fifth annual N.C. High School Invitational golf tournament at Treyburn Country Club in Durham.

Murray (73) won medalist honors by four strokes.

"It was very windy and the greens were the fastest that we have encountered," Leesville Road coach David Hunt said. "Grayson thrives in that kind of setting. He adjusts well to greens that are faster than the ones that he practices on."

The Pride topped Gastonia Forestview, 313-325. Broughton (334) was third.

"We played well considering the conditions," Hunt said.

"... We have had four different people medal in matches or tournaments."

Triton suspends lacrosse: Erwin Triton has suspended its varsity boys lacrosse program for the rest of the season but will play junior varsity games.

"Our team has been depleted by injuries, and it reached the point that it isn't safe to continue playing on the varsity level," said Chip Mangum, the Triton athletic director. "We have some freshmen and sophomores and a senior or two who are just learning how to play."

Lacrosse is a new sport for the Hawks.

"We were trying to learn the most basic skills and playing in a conference against programs like Apex, Middle Creek and Holly Springs," Mangum said. "... We hope to have a varsity team next year."

Athens Drive football: Four more Athens Drive football players have made commitments recently. Linebacker Cameron Boone and defensive lineman Myles Quimby are headed to the Globe Institute of Technology in New York City. Running back Kyree Green and defensive end Zach Bender have signed with Fayetteville State.

Earlier, wide receiver Louis Wilder signed with Iowa Falls (Iowa) Ellsworth Community College.

Brunson drives in six: Sanderson's Kim Brunson hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the Spartans' 21-1 softball victory over Southeast Raleigh this week. Brunson leads the area in homers with eight.
