Dense clouds this morning are expected to keep temperatures cooler today than the scorcher previously forecast, the National Weather Service in Raleigh said.
Today's high is expected to be in the low to mid-80s, depending on how quickly this morning's clouds dissipate, weather service meteorologist Brandon Vincent said.
It's unlikely, he said, that the high will reach 89, the record for today's date, which was set in 1978.
The normal highs for this time of year are in the low 70s, Vincent said.
Tuesday's temperatures are expected to be more seasonal after a cold front moves through overnight bringing possible storms.
